In this episode of HealthCert’s GP Insights podcast, we talk about the upcoming changes to CPD accreditation commencing in 2023, with Paul Elmslie and Prof David Wilkinson.
How is CPD changing?
In the podcast, Paul and Prof Wilkinson explain how from January 2023 all doctors practising in Australia will be required to complete CPD on an annual basis rather than within a triennium. CPD will shift to hours instead of points. Each year, all doctors must complete 50 hours of CPD activities, consisting of:
- Minimum 12½ hours education
- Minimum 5 hours performance review
- Minimum 5 hours outcome measurement
All doctors must meet these requirements, regardless of hours worked. A transition period will take place in 2023. About 5% of doctors will be audited. The purpose of these changes is to place a greater emphasis on measuring clinical outcomes in the practice.
What is a CPD Home?

doctors to belong to a CPD Home, where their CPD hours and annual activities are collated. There will be various CPD Home providers, including HealthCert Education, and doctors can belong to more than one provider.

After more than 2 years of severe post covid stress and serious risks as well as loss of income followed by lack of so many medical services and supplies due to the international economic catastrophe .Now you are expecting the doctors to get involved in more stressful adventures with this new unjustified unpredictable experiment. I think doctors really deserve a long break to recover from this unprecedented international disasters. I am very concerned about all my other colleagues who still got a long way to go in practice as I have decided to retire before getting involved in such a guinea pig experiment!
We understand your concerns about the changes and requirements. The change to the CPD requirements is initiated by the Australia Medical Board and the Health Ministers. While it does mean you will need to do some additional CPD activities, it is very likely that you are already doing many of these activities as part of your daily practice, or there may be simple processes you can add into your practice that will document these activities. HealthCert and other CPD providers are working hard to design “CPD” activities that you integrate into your practice so that it is not difficult to do, or an additional time burden.

Had a good overview on the upcoming changes to the CPD requirements from 2023.
A few questions arose, some answered, some still to be answered. One of them is, can the PDP be changed in the middle of the year if focus changes for some reason?
Another one is, who do we need to report to: the colleges/AHPRA/individual CPD Home providers?
Another is, is there any scope of self conducted activities and reporting as was there before?
As we progress more questions will probably arise.

Can PDP be changed?
There are no “rules” about the PDP that have been provided by the AMC, other than the requirements to begin your year with one ,and that it be recorded (document, form, email etc.). It would be totally appropriate to update your PDP if your scope of practice or goals change. The PDP is NOT submitted to the AMC or AHRPA at any time, you are simply required to keep on file (or your CPD Home can for you) and may be required to provide evidence to the ANC that you have one if you get randomly audited.
Who do we need to report to?
You need to select a CPD Home and then update your CPD to that CPD Home. Then at the end of the year the CPD Home will report to the AMC, ONLY if you have met the requirements. You are also able to have more than one CPD Home, however you only need to record ALL your activities in the CPD Home system.
Is there any scope of self conducted activities and reporting as was there before?
Yes – you are able do document any activities yourself and self-report them to your CPD Home. Your CPD Home should be able to provide information around the requirements and format of those reports.

How is going g to be presented to who and how is it going to be checked out
Thanks for your question 🙂 The AMC and the existing colleges will be sending out information and guidance in due course. HealthCert will also sharing information regarding the requirements and how our courses will help you meet all the requirements.
You will be required to select a CPD Home (the RACGP and ACRRM will be the first ones), and then record your CPD with them in their online CPD tracking systems throughout the year. You will only need to record your activities in their system and you wont be “checked out” unless you are randomly chosen to be audited in any year.
