[Online lecture] Inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects 1 in 250 Australians and the prevalence is increasing. In this online lecture, Catherine Wall, PhD and NZ Registered Dietitian, discusses how to provide nutritional screening and assessment for IBD and explores the latest survey results from patients that can help guide your discussions.
In the lecture, Catherine explains who IBD primarily affects and what symptoms patients experience. She looks at the results of a recent survey which found that overwhelmingly patients are frustrated by the difficulty of accessing dietetic services to better manage their IBD.
Diet plays a role in the pathogenesis of IBD. To that end, proper nutrition is important during periods of inflammation and remission, and diet can be used as an adjuvant to medical therapy in the treatment of IBD.
