[12 min read] The role of sentinel lymph node biopsy in melanoma management

Posted on

What is your position regarding the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in the management of patients with melanoma?

Do you know what the latest national guidelines are? Do you follow them?

You might be interested in the attached paper that surveyed Australian dermatologists on exactly this topic. Here is a key sentence from the paper:

Accordingly, interviewees adopted one of three positions in relation to SLNB: (a) believed in utility of SLNB and adhered to the guidelines; (b) were unconvinced about utility of SLNB but adhered to the guidelines; and (c) were unconvinced about utility of SLNB and did not adhere to the guidelines.

Where do you fit?

Only 56 per cent of surveyed dermatologists believe SLNB has an important role to play in management of melanoma.
