In this month’s skin cancer update video with Professor Giuseppe Argenziano, we look at his latest fascinating study into how patient management can change after diagnostic review by a second dermatopathologist.
The study found that a second diagnostic opinion by an experienced dermatopathologist significantly changes the clinical management of patients with cutaneous melanoma. In fact, this is the situation with over 1 in 4 cases.
Significantly, many lesions assessed in the study which were considered borderline or unidentified at the first diagnosis were definitively categorised as naevus or melanoma by the second dermatopathologist.
This change in diagnosis after the second opinion significantly affected the patients’ treatment and ongoing management.
