Even the most experienced skin cancer doctors can sometimes face challenging surgical cases that simply can’t be appropriately managed in the primary care or skin cancer clinic setting. In this short video, Dr Tony Azzi talks about some of the circumstances in which he might refer a skin cancer surgery patient to a specialist.

Some scenarios in which you might prefer to refer the patient to a specialist for skin cancer surgery include:

  • Surgery on delicate areas like the tarsal plate of the eyelid
  • The patient would prefer to see a plastic surgeon for cosmetic reasons
  • The patient requires general anaesthetic
  • The lesion is too large
  • The lesion is in an area where you don’t usually operate
