[3 min read] Non-surgical treatment for gummy smile
Patients who have a ‘gummy smile’ – a smile that shows a large portion of their gums whenever they talk, smile or laugh – often report that they hold back from expressing themselves because they feel self-conscious about showing too much of their gums.
There is, however, a quick and effective procedure that can correct a gummy smile without requiring surgery.
In the past, the only way to fix a gummy smile was to undergo an operation to remove excess gum tissue.
Anti-wrinkle injections can now be used to give the same effect as gum lift surgery. It is commonly known as a ‘lunchtime procedure’ because it takes less than an hour to perform, with minimal downtime or side effects for the patient. The results can last from four to six months.
The injections go into the lip muscles above the mouth (under the nose) which control the patient’s ability to contract the upper lip when they smile. It prevents the upper lip from raising too high.
The procedure is ideal for people with overactive muscles that cause the lip to curl up when they smile, exposing too much gum.
The procedure will not freeze the patient’s smile or stunt the expression around their mouth, as the muscles used to smile are not immobilised. Because the injections are placed in the ‘elevator’ muscles, it allows patients to smile bigger and brighter without fearing that they are showing too much gum.
