What is the link between obesity and rosacea?
What is the link between obesity and rosacea? This poorly understood relationship was the focus of a study recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
The cohort study was the first to determine the association between obesity and the risk of incident rosacea, and included 89,886 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study II (1991-2005).
Over 14 years of follow up, the researchers identified 5,249 incident cases of rosacea. The risk of rosacea was elevated for people with increased body mass index.
There was a trend towards increased risk of rosacea among participants who gained weight after age 18. Researchers also observed significantly increased risk of rosacea associated with a higher waist and hip circumference, and the associations appeared to be independent of body mass index.
The study concluded that obesity is significantly associated with an increased risk of incident rosacea.
