Therapy used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori is also an effective rosacea treatment, according to a recent study published in The Journal of Dermatology.

Rosacea is a chronic dermatological disease, and one of its causative factors is thought to be the bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

In a single-arm clinical trial, researchers attempted to evaluate the effect of Helicobacter pylori standard eradication protocol on patients who presented with rosacea.

Patients with Helicobacter pylori were assessed to examine the existence of rosacea. Patients with concurrent rosacea and Helicobacter pylori were included in the study and underwent standard Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy.

Rosacea was evaluated using the Duluth rosacea grading score at the beginning of the trial, two months into the trial, and at the end, which was at 180 days.

Of 872 patients positive for Helicobacter pylori, 167 patients (over 19 percent) manifested the clinical features of rosacea. The patients with concurrent rosacea were typically younger and predominantly female when compared to rosacea-free patients.

Of those 167 patients, 150 received Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy. By the end of the trial, 138 patients were cured, representing 92 percent.

The rosacea Duluth score grading on day zero, 60 and 180 among 138 patients significantly decreased in most of the criteria except for telangiectasias, phymatous changes, and the existence of peripheral involvement.

The study concluded that Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy improves rosacea symptoms and is a successful rosacea treatment.
